Maurice Jones

Photo of Maurice Maurice Jones is an internationally known piano-accordion entertainer. He has frequently appeared on T.V. and National Radio in New Zealand and has several T.V. and radio performances in Germany and Hong Kong to his credit. He has performed extensively in England, Germany and Italy, as well as his home country New Zealand.

In January 1998 Maurice toured China, playing concerts and giving workshops in Shanghai, Fuzhou and Xiamin cities. These concerts were organised by the Shanghai Accordion Association and the Fujian Accordion Association and were reportedly the first MIDI synthesised accordion concerts in China.

In Shanghai, Maurice filled the 1500 seat Shanghai Concert Theatre two nights running, with hundreds queued up outside hoping for a spare ticket (this concert theatre is the most prestigious venue in Shanghai). Press and TV news covered Maurice's modern electronic/acoustic programme which included hits like Lambada, Dancing Queen (Abba), tangos and American marches and he was mobbed by autograph hunters after every concert. Workshops were given in each city on improvisation, own arrangements, and modern bass rhythms.

Maurice was born in Auckland, March 1955 and started to play the accordion at the age 9 years. At the age of 16 he won the New Zealand Solo Accordion Championship.

With his brother, Harley Jones, he has recorded an LP record and been featured soloist on a number of accordion LP and CD recordings. He has regularly performed as a session musician, recording advertising jingles and supporting several top New Zealand bands. A few years ago he was backing accordionist for well known Scottish entertainer Andy Stewart on his 20 concert tour of New Zealand.
