Joanna Arnold Darrow - Concert Accordionist
 

 

Joanna Arnold is the personal protégé of Stanley Darrow. During studies at the Acme Accordion School she has covered all aspects of musical training and has specialized in music of the Baroque Period and Chamber Music. Compositional and analyses has been with Dr. E. Avril and Guy Klucevsek. Performing in conjunction with Bassoon, Harp, Harpsichord, Strings and Piano, Joanna has brought the accordion to the attention of local professional musicians and to members of the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, for which she now serves as staff accordionist.

Joanna recently performed Alan Hovhanness's Fantasy for Accordion, Speaker and Orchestra entitled "Rubaiuat of Omar Khayyam" with the Kennett Square Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Mary Green.

Currently she is preparing for performances of the Concerto No. 1 by Anthony Galla-Rini with Symphonic Ensembles in Europe. Joanna is an active member of the Westmont Philharmonia Accordion Orchestra and the Quintet Accord. She holds Executive Secretary position for the Accordionists and Teachers Guild, International. She has also been appointed adjunct accordion instructor for accordion majors at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey.

Stanley Darrow - Concert Accordionist
 

 

Stanley Darrow, noted accordion teacher, concert performer and lecturer is from Camden, NJ. He has studied at New York City College of Music, Combs College, PA, Neupauer Conservatory of Music, PA, and the Hohner Konservatorium in Trossigen, Germany. In 1952 Stanley and Sherrie Darrow founded the Acme Accordion School with branches in Pitman and Westmont, New Jersey.

Stanley is a member of the Accordion Teachers' Association of New Jersey, and the American Accordionists' Association. He is an active board member of the Accordionists and Teachers Guild, International and the American Accordion Musicological Society. In addition to these activities, he is responsible for the accordion being accepted as a major instrument at Rowan University. With his interest in contemporary accordion music, he was the first to release an all contemporary LP of all original accordion music in 1965. He is founder-director of the Westmont Philharmonia Accordion Orchestra (1960), one of the few serious accordion orchestras in the USA.

Joanna and Stanley - Concert Accordion Duo
 

 

Joanna Arnold and Stanley Darrow have been a professional duo team since 1971. Their first performance was at the American Accordion Musicological Society Symposium #1.

Since that time they have been dedicated to serious performances of the accordion through a vast and diversified repertoire. Their repertoire includes music of the early Coptek Church, Renaissance Periods, Bach, Handel, Mozart, Boellman, Widor, Schoenberg, Cage, Riley, etc... In addition they place a strong emphasis on original accordion duo music, featuring the music of Dr. Edwin Avril and Dr. William Schimmel. The duo also includes ethnic music from many nations in their programs.

One of the duos prime performance mediums is the School Systems in both the USA and European countries, presenting programs entitled, "A Trip Through Time". This program is presented to students in grades K through 12 and educates students on the history of the accordion in relation to world history. While on their annual concert tours, the duo performs for Accordion Clubs, Community Concert Series, Television and Radio Broadcasts.
