International Accordion Concert - Germany

The Akkordeonclub 1968 Bammental have organized an "International Accordion Concert" on October 30th at the Elsenzhalle Bammental, Baden-Württemberg. Participating orchestras will include the "Akkordeonclub 1968 Bammental" and its ensemble "Take Five", the "Accordeon Club de la Brie" (Coulommiers, France) and the "Dublin City Orchestra" (Dublin, Ireland).

Over 500 people are expected to attend the concert which will include pieces such as "Take Five", "Rhapsodia Andalusia", "Finlandia", "Carmen Vorspiel", "Lord of the Dance", "Der Zigeunerbaron" and "Irische Suite".

The Akkordeonclub Bammental have had an active exchange program with the French orchestra since 1990. Their contact with the Irish Orchestra is a very new one and was initiated by an orchestra member who spent a year in Dublin as an "au pair". The groups will partake in sightseeing and wine tasting during their stay in Germany.

International Concertina Association Meeting - UK

The International Concertina Association will hold its Annual General Meeting from October 15th to 17th in Maulden, Bedfordshire. The event will open with a concert by Alistair Anderson who will also hold a workshop later in the weekend.

Other events include performances at the Maulden Parish, a workshop by Robert Harbron, dancing and entertainment.

New Works Commissioned - Finland

The Ministry of Education in Finland is promoting new compositions for the accordion and has given the Finnish Accordion Institute US$2,500 to commission new works. The Institute has also commissioned a concerto for accordion and string orchestra by well known Finnish composer Timo-Juhani Kyllönen. The premier of these works will be in the summer of 2000.

French Wine Concert - France

French accordionist Bruno Maurice will perform at the "Golf de Limère" in Orléans on September 25th with his quintet which also includes clarinet, piano, bassoon and electric guitar. The concert will present their new CD "The sound of taste" ("Le son du goût") which comprises of music composed by Jean-Pierre Chalet and Bruno Maurice. CD tracks represent the colors, smells and taste of very prestigious French wines such as Bordeaux, Bourgogne, Saumur , Montlouis and Pouilly Fumé.

During the concert, the audience will be given these wines so they can "drink and think" with the music.

New Zealand Premiere Performance

Chinese accordionist Lian Jones (nee Huang Ling Ling) performed the New Zealand premiere of "Concert Waltz" for solo accordion and string orchestra on September 11th in Auckland. The event was organized by the Auckland Taiwanese Presbyterian Church Formosa String Orchestra.

"Concert Waltz" by well known New Zealand composer and orchestra conductor Gary Daverne, was written for accordionist Kevin Friedrich and a string quartet. This performance which was attended by Gary Daverne, was the first time it had been performed with a full (35 piece) string orchestra, under the baton of Director Victor Fu.

The concert was enthusiastically received by a capacity audience of over 600. Gary, who has composed many works for the accordion was the first to congratulate Lian Jones after her performance. A second concert was held on September 18th in Greenlane, Auckland.

 
Premiere Fisarmoniae Italian Accordion News - Italy

This week is the premiere edition of the Italian accordion internet news by Fisarmoniae. This association, which has many famous Italian performers as members, has decided to start making news online once a month as a means to better reach large numbers of Italian accordionists both in Italy and in other parts of the world.

Fisarmoniae in cooperation with Accordions Worldwide, (who is sponsoring the site), are planning to take advantage of the 90% annual increase of computers on line in Italian, to help co-ordinate and promote accordion activity in the region.

Popular Jazz Concert - Denmark

On September 18th "KDN Cajun Band" played at "the Black Coq" in the Espergaerde Harbour, 30 miles north of Copenhagen. KDN invited jazz-saxophonist Svend Storgaard to join them for this concert. As a result of information available on the world wide web, American accordionists Tim Parker and Karen Summers also attended the concert, which was a great success with the capacity crowd of jazz enthusiasts.

On September 24th KDN (with accordionist Karen Munkholm) will play at "The International Meeting Place" in Svendborg on the Island of Funen. This venue was established four years ago as a place where people of different cultures can meet and now has members from over 25 different countries. A capacity crowd is expected.

Christopher Columbus Italian Festival - USA

The annual Christopher Columbus Italian Festival was held in Cumberland, Western Maryland on September 11th and 12th. Accordionists Mario Tacca and Dick Contino performed a variety of popular pieces to over 3,000 in attendance. Mario also performed Italian favorites with vocalist Mary Mancini such as "Tic Ti Tic Ta", "O Sole Mio" and "Con Te Partiro".

 
Cathedral Concert - Spain

On October 1st Ukrainian composer and accordionist Vladimir Zubitsky will hold a concert at the Cathedral of Ourense in Spain organized by the Comune de Ourense, Conservatorio Professionale de Musica. Vladimir's program will include organ and harpsichord music and his own compositions such as "Carpathian suite" and fragments from Concert "Rossiniana".

Memorial Scholarship Evening - New Zealand

The "Allan William Jones Memorial Scholarship Evening" hosted by the Accordion Examination Board of New Zealand was held on September 12th in Auckland.

The evening included performances by six orchestras and the SCWALT quintet as well as presentations of scholarships and awards. The evening concluded with a fun "mass orchestra" performance of "Frére Jacques".

The "Rose Bowl" award was presented to Ross Braithwaite (Hamilton) for the highest mark gained in a practical examination in the past year and scholarships went to: Ryan Harding (Grades 3 & 4), Jenna Murray Travis McWalter (Grades 5 & 6) and Paula Harris (Grades 7 & 8).

"Fisorchestra Italiana" on Tour - Italy

The opening concert of the "Fisorchestra Italiana" tour was held on September 18th at the Sardinian club "Circolo A.M.I.S. E. Lussu" in Cinisello Balsamo (Milan Province). The following day they performed at the "Festival Provinciale dell'Unità" in Palavobis (Milan), with special guest Peppino Principe. A TV crew from the national broadcasting company covered the event, which was televised the next day. On the 23rd they played at the Elena Theatre in Sesto San Giovanni, one of the best theatres in the Milanese area.

Special Guest at Soar Valley Accordion Club Concert - England

Russian accordionist Alexander Korbakov will make a guest appearance at the Soar Valley Accordion Club Concert, Rothley Centre, Rothley, Nr Leicester on October 16th. Over 100 people are expected to attend this concert which will also include a performance by the Leicester Accordion Orchestra.

Australian Accordionist Celebrates in Style

Australian accordion Champion Bernadette Conlon celebrated her 21st birthday in style recently on the Yarra River in Melbourne. Hiring a charter boat for four hours revelers wined and dined the night away to the sounds of the accordion. The party included 10 accordionists, several pianists and vocalists, many of whom performed items from comedy acts to accordion recitals.

Among the highlights were items by Pavel Sluka, Leo Rosner (from "Schindlers List" fame), Jeannette Morrish, well known Piaf impersonator Robyn Pitt Owen (Sydney), Arnold Roe and Tracey Harvey, television's funny girl.

Guests traveled from Sweden, United States and New Zealand as well as from various parts of Australia.

 
King's Bar Concert - Japan

Czech Festival - USA

From September 24th to 26th a Czech Festival will be held in Orinda to celebrate the birthday of King Wenceslas. A delegation of 14 people from Tabor (including the Vice Mayor) will attend the celebrations.

Entertainers include the San Francisco Accordion Chamber Ensemble performing Czech waltzes, polkas and special arrangements of music by Dvorak. Ensemble Director, Joe Smiell composed and arranged music especially for the event. Other performers include a duo of Sharon Walters (accordion) and Valarie Morris (clarinet).

Accordionist in Opera - Australia

Elizabeth JonesAccordionist Elizabeth Jones (Director of Music Education Maroubra School) will perform in the Australian Opera production "Wozzeck" (by German composer Berg), conducted by Johannes Fritzsch (Austria). The opera will be staged at the world famous Sydney Opera House from October 11th to November 3rd.

A.D.A.M Welcomes Sylvia Pagni - Canada

Sylvia Pagni and Marco Galeazzi (Cemex) were treated to a wonderful reception during their recent Canadian tour. In Montreal they were welcomed by Paolo Vani, President of A.D.A.M., and by Mrs Mennie. Sylvia performed a concert on September 9th to a capacity audience who enjoyed the Italian melodies she presented.

Sylvia also represented Italy at the 11th annual "Carrefour mondiale de l'accordeon" held recently in Montmagny. Sylvia played during the final concert, presenting a program of musette, classical, symphonic and jazz/classical music on both the traditional and MIDI accordion.

 
Exhibition Concert - Italy

The "Tango e altre storie" quartet performed on September 19th in Leumann Village, Collegno, Torino Province. The concert took place at an exhibition of textile craftsmanship showcasing the works of over 100 artisans.

Four Town Fair Concert - USA

Accordionist John Jeski & "The John Jeski Band" performed six 1 hour shows at the "Four Town Fair" on September 17th and 19th in Somers, Connecticut. The group (including accordion, guitar, vocals, saxophone, clarinet, flute and drums) played many favorites to over 5,000 people.

On September 18th the band played three shows at the "Big E" in West Springfield, Massachusetts to a crowd of over 30,000. Their next performance will be an outdoor concert at the Riverdale Farms Shopping Plaza, Avon, Connecticut on September 25th followed by an evening performance at the German American Club in Bristol.

The Jews Brothers Band Tours Australia

The Jews Brothers BandNew Zealand group "The Jews Brothers Band" will tour Australia from October 2nd to 14th. The group includes accordionist Hershal, Nigel Gavin (mandolin, banjo, guitar), Linn Lorkin (vocals and melodica), Neill Duncan (saxophone, percussion, zydeco metal washboard) and Peter Scott (double bass).

The group will perform 2 concerts at the Bellingen Global Carnival in Bellingen, and 4 concerts in Sydney including a performance at a klezmer/gypsy dance party with Monsieur Camembert and the JBB in Bondi Junction

When they return to New Zealand, they will finish recording their second album which is to be called "My Yiddish Swing".

Antique Accordion Information

Guy Duke would like some information on a "Voge D'oro", "Alpina" stradella accordion. The case has an emblem with the words "Fibragarantita", "Scotti" and "Milano" on it. Guy needs some repairs done to it and would appreciate any information.

He also has a 12 bass "Crucianelli" accordion, which is made in Italy with two treble octaves. If you can help with either instrument please email: rduke@pcola.gulf.net
