19th International Festival
'Bayan and Bayanists' - Russia
With participation of the federal agency of culture and cinematography
of Russia, Russian Gnessin Academy of Music and the Friedrich
Lips Fund, the traditional XVIII International Festival
'Bayan and Bayanists' took place in the concert hall of the
Gnessin Academy of Music in Moscow from December 5th to 9th.
Part of the festival tradition is to honor special milestones
in the history of the bayan/accordion. This years festival,
celebrated the 100th birthday of the construction of the first
bayan in Russia. Also celebrated was the famous master Y. Volkovitsh,
who was responsible for some further important steps in the
development of the instrument. His 80th birthday was celebrated.
The first part of the opening concert was arranged by the accordion
orchestra 'Vivat, accordion!' conducted by Valentina Bobisheva
of the Schnittke-Music College and the chamber orchestra of
the Gnessin Music Academy conducted by Timur Mynbajev.
Soloists were pianist Svjatoslav Lips (Ephrem Podgaits: 'Rondo'
for piano and orchestra) as well as bayanist People's Artist
Lips (picture left - Astor Piazzolla: 'Aconcagua', concert
for bandoneon and chamber orchestra).
For the second part, young Russian prize-winners of international
competitions of 2007 were acclaimed by the public: Victor-Daniel
Eliasson, J. Puriz, D. Stadnjuk, I. Salachov, Semjion Shmelkov
(bayan) with flautist O. Somanovskaya.
The following three evenings were dedicated to artists from
different countries: S. Najko, Yuri
Scharov (Russia), Max Bonnay (France), Angel
L. Castaño (picture left - Spain), as well as 'Trio
Mobile' (J.Gurevitsh, bayan; A.Groshev, flute; N.Telminova,
violoncello) from Nischny Novgorod. All performers emphasized
the different facets of the bayan in their way.
The Gala concert brought an absolute musical highlight with
the appearance of Stefan Hussong (Germany). The large musical
range from a traditional Gagaku of 10th century Japan to the
musical avant-garde of John Cage or Adriana Hoelszky was very
impressive. With V. Osipov (Concertino and xylophon), accompanied
on the piano by Svjatoslav Lips, as well as the group of 'Bely
Den' (White Day) the concert ended in lively fashion.
'Silver Discs' were conferred on accordionists/bayanists Stefan
Shisckin, Vatcheslav Galkin, Sergey Najko and to the masters
V. Vassiliev, A. Tshernov und S. Kashinzev
for merits in the bayan art.
Exhibitions and presentations of musical instruments of chief
world producers took place in the foyer of the concert hall
Russian Gnessin Academy of Music throughout the festival.
Premiere of New Version of Piazzolla`s The Seasons
concert accordionist Miran Vaupotic has finished a series of concerts
with well-known guitarist Robert Belinic and one of the most famous
Croatian classical ensembles, 'Zagreb Soloists', with whom he debuted
on bandoneon in a special, new arrangement of 'The Seasons', by Astor
Piazzolla, for bandoneon, guitar and orchestra.
Concerts have recently taken place in Spain at the VIII Festival de
Otono in Jaen at Aula Magna de la Universidad and in Croatia at concert
halls in Velika Gorica, and the Croatian Music Institute Concert Hall
were very successful, with soloists and ensemble thrilling their audiences
with extraordinary musicality, imaginative interpretations, refined
technique and very engaging playing. They have received standing ovations,
which resulted in encores.
Miran has also collaborated with important composers, whose works
he has premiered including A. Markovic, T. Uhlik, D. Palanovic and
D. Bobic. He performed Croatian premiere of Eshaton Concerto by Davor
Bobic, which is first bayan concerto in history of Croatian music.
Miran intends to record this new arrangement of 'The Seasons', by
Piazzolla, and also publish the sheet music.
Frank Marocco has released DVD that features a live 'master class
workshop', in which this leading accordionist goes into great detail
to explain and demonstrate how to learn to play jazz and play improvisations
as well as how to create bass lines for the great music standards.

with bass, drums and guitar.
