ORLA's New Products, Castelfidardo - Italy
Contributed by Holda Paoletti-Kampl

In the last 10 years, the ORLA company has always been involved in the midi accordion market, offering a wide range of products (electronic accordions, arranger modules and special keyboards for accordion players), always having in mind the real needs of the players.

Following the success of the XM900 ands XM200 modules, two arranger modules that are not only very easy to use but also have excellent built in accordion sounds, ORLA is introducing the new XM400. This is a new arranger module that has the quality sounds of the XM family units including the accordion sounds, regarded by many as the best available in that type of unit. The XM400 also features a new selection of 130 styles from the best of the ORLA library plus a wide selection of brand new styles, for all types of music.

The very competitive XM400 price still includes Standard Midi File disk drive and a big LCD backlit display. For those used to playing button accordions, ORLA has introduced a new model KX9 Chromatic. ORLA believes this is the best product ever made for button players, 87 keys for the treble keyboard and 120 basses. There is a selection of 240 sounds, including the famous 40 accordions of the ORLA library, and 130 styles. There are two sections for the right hand together with the possibility of sustained chords with the auto accompaniment and bass section.

Death of Joseph Zarnich, Pittsburgh - USA
Contributed by Rob Howard

Known to many as 'The Accordion Man', Joseph Zarnich died on August 25th at the age of 90 from lung cancer. Zarnich was an accordion teacher and repair technician, and was also a professional player, well known in and around Pittsburgh. He performed solo and also with the Polish Aristocrats
Orchestra.

Joseph Zarnich's parents were from Yugoslavia, and introduced him to the accordion at an early age. Although a highly skilled performer, Zarnich received most satisfaction from teaching. He was known as a fine and enthusiastic teacher, with a sense of humour. His daughter Christine commented: "He taught kids of middle class, and people with low incomes. If they couldn't afford to pay for what he called the beginner's class, they might make him food or something. He just loved to see people play."

Death of Alice Dells, Macclesfield - UK
Contributed by Rob Howard

Alice Dells, one of England's first international accordion star players, died on August 27th at the age of 83. Born Alice Swindells in 1922, Alice was the All Britain Advanced Champion in 1936. She was taught by the late Syd Baxter, who is remembered by many as the composer of the well-known accordion solo 'Gypsy Mood'.

As Alice Dells, she went on to a long and successful career as a professional accordionist, pianist and accordion teacher. Alice performed in many countries worldwide, but remained based in the Cheshire town of Macclesfield, where she taught the accordion for several decades and was the organiser of the local British College of Accordionists' examination centre. Alice Dells was highly respected by the accordion fraternity in the UK, and never lost any of her great playing ability, even in old age and infirmity.
