The Symphorine Duet Award Nomination, Moscow - Russia
Contributed by Holda Paoletti-Kampl

The Symphorine Duet (Yuri Medianik and Jehanne Strepenne) has been awarded the Grand Prix (Duet Nomination) in the Open Europe Festival Competition held in Moscow. The close of the event and the Gala Concert by the competition winners with participation of the duet were held in the Big Hall of the Moscow State Philharmonic (Tchaikovsky Concert Hall).

The duet has performed since 2004. The distinguishing feature of its concerts is that Yuri Medianik's double talent as a bayan player and violinist allows the duet cover an amazingly extensive repertoire from baroque and unrenowned music by composers who wrote for two violins.

Another peculiarity is that all orchestration and transcriptions they play they make themselves. To date, the duet has played several concerts in Belgium, Russia and France (with participation of the Accordion Association of Arques), participation in the inauguration ceremony of an exhibition organized by Mr Francko, Head of the EU Representative Office in Moscow etc.

The mission of the Open Europe Festival Competition is to create opportunities to interact for the young, discover new talents and provide opportunities to see and appreciate national cultures and arts from various countries. The events of the festival were widely covered in the media, including ORT, TVC, Kultura and Stolitza TV channels and newspapers.

Accordionist Ken Astin, from Blackpool, has released two new CDs. 'Playing to Please' is a solo recording, containing a wide range of standards, Latin, French musette, a selection from the musical 'Oliver', and 'Brittania', composed by Frosini. Some tracks feature midi sounds, and others are played on acoustic accordion.

The other CD, 'Our Kind of Music', is a debut duet recording between Ken Astin and accordionist Harry Hussey (right), featuring a program of popular jazz standards by such composers as Harold Arlen, Jimmy Van Heusen, George Gershwin and Neal Hefti, involving acoustic accordions and midi accompaniment sounds.

Ken Astin returned to playing accordion two years ago after spending many years working as an organist in Blackpool. Harry Hussey is very popular at accordion clubs and festivals throughout England, and is probably best known as a jazz accordionist with a vast repertoire.
