The Accordion Playing (Scottish Style) summer school begins this weekend from 4th July at the University of Stirling at Airthrey Castle, Stirling. Participants on the program have come from Surrey, North Yorkshire, Fife, Central Scotland and the Scottish Highlands representing all age ranges from teenagers upwards. The summer school coordinator, Margery Stirling said the university was hoping for more international participation.

"In past years we have had an international presence with participants from USA, some European countries and Japan," she said. They are hoping to attract more students from other countries for another accordion programme planned for 9th to 13th August.

Highlights of the summer school include classes where students spend time to brush up on techniques. There will also be opportunities to learn new music and students will even get to play with participants from similar summer programs for Fiddle and Bodhran Playing.

    Southeast Accordion Association - USA

A Southeast Accordion Association will soon be established. The association, to encompass the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia is still in its planning stages. According to Karen Adam of the Florida Accordion Association, all the states above have very few accordion clubs.

"This endeavor will not deter from current accordion clubs, but will certainly enhance them," Karen said. There is strength in numbers! Karen said the new association plans to include a quarterly newsletter for the Southeast, as well as holding an annual convention in a different southeastern state each year! There are even plans to set up a SEACCASSOC Southeast Accordion Association website!

The Las Vegas International Accordion Convention had 7 concerts with almost 16 hours of music programs which included polka jam sessions, performances by classical and jazz artists like Peter and Mady Soave, Art Van Damme, Mario Tacca and his wife (singer) Mary Mancini, the very entertaining K-Trio, Don Lipovac, Gary Blair from Scotland, Mirco Patarini from Italy and Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Tony Lovello. Also present were factory reps from both Scandalli (Mirco Patarini) and Silvetta Accordions (Bert Neidhardt) with other accordion brands and accessories on display.

The next Las Vegas International Convention will be held from 26th to 29th June 2005 at the Gold Coast Hotel Casino. Next year's convention will also be the birthday celebrations of both Dick Contino (75 Years) and Art Van Damme (85 years).
