40th International Klingenthal Competition

May 2nd to 9th, the 40th
International Accordion Competition was held in Klingenthal
(Germany). This year's Jury consisted of famous teachers and performers
Jürgen Ganzer, Fritz Dobler, Stefan Fraas, Tobias Morgenstern,
Gudrun Wall, Georg Reidys, Ulf Seifert (Germany), Owen
Murray (Great Britain), Friedrich
Lips (Russia), Elsbeth Moser (Switzerland), Jacques Mornet (France),
Claudio
Jacomucci (Italy), Lech Puchnowski (Poland), Tibor Racz (Slovakia),
Iñaki Alberdi (Spain), Jan Meisl (Czech Republic), Anders
Grothe (Norway) and Voin Vasovic (Yugoslavia).
The
opening concert saw a performance by the Accordion Orchestra of
Untergrombach (conducted by Wolfgang Pfeffer). On Monday May 5th,
Elsbeth Moser (accordion) joined Christoph Marks (cello) for a brilliant
recital of chamber music, surely one of the highlights of this event.
On the 7th, Tobias Morgenstern met the LeipJAZZig Orkester in a
kind of tango-jazz-fusion.
Workshops were held by Owen
Murray dealing with accordion music in England and the new button
accordion SUPITA II. Prof. Ganzer was the chairman of a round table
discussion about the relationship between German Music Academies
and the International Accordion Competition of Klingenthal.
The next (41st) International Accordion Competition
in Klingenthal
will be held from May 7th to 14th, 2004.

Kimberley Festival to Feature LynnMarie - Canada
Among
the star line up performing at the annual Kimberley
International Old Time Accordion Championships in Kimberley,
British Colombia from July 7th to 13th will be accordionist LynnMarie.
LynnMarie, the first female to win a Grammy
nomination for "Best Polka Album", is an artist who brings
a new dimension to music. Her high energy, good looks, and a repertoire
that incorporates folk, Cajun country, tex-mex, rock 'n' roll and
polka, make her truly unique. After you see, hear and experience
her talent, you will realize you've witnessed something that is
one of a kind!
LynnMarie's concert is scheduled for July 9th.

World Record Attempt - Austria

On June 22nd a world record attempt for the
largest number of accordion players will be made in Graz. Over 2,000
accordionists from Austria and Europe are expected to participate.
The world record attempt will start at 1pm with
a kind of "sound wave" where all the players will line
up in the streets and squares. The record attempt will be monitored
by the Guinness Book of Records.

Free Bass Accordion Concert - China

Xie Yan (accordion teacher at the Keyboard
Department of Xian Music Conservatory) held a solo free bass concert
at the School Concert Hall recently.
Ms Xie graduated from the Music Education Department
of Xian Music Conservatory in 1981 and gained a 2nd place at the
China Cup 1st National Accordion Competition in 1990. She then studied
with Prof. Semionov
in Russia from 1996 to 1998, then studied with Prof Lips.
Xie Yan released her first free bass accordion recording in Moscow
in March 2002. The CD is now on sale in China.
At this concert Xie Yan performed a variety
of different pieces including Bach's "Prelude in D minor",
"Sonata in A Major", Scarlatti's "Sonata in E Major",
and Piazzolla tangos. The concert was well received by the audience.

Amsterdam Club Forzando Quintet Open Air Concert

The Amsterdam Accordion Club Forzando Quintet
will perform an open air concert in the "Musikpavillon"
in the "Hofgarten" (opposite the congress complex) in
Innsbruck on May 31st. The concert is one of a series being held
in May and June.
Their program will include "Prelude"
(Marc-Antoine Charpentier), "Nordische Sonate" (G. Mohr)
and "The Magnificent Seven" (E. Bernstein). For details

"Avalon Ballroom" Concert - USA

Hammond was a guest recently at the newly re-opened and renovated
"Avalon Ballroom" at the "Sons of Champlin"
concert with opener Bonnie Hayes and her band. James Preston (the
Sons' drummer) and Jon have played together off and on for many
years.
Many of the bands that started the San Francisco
folk-rock movement began their careers at this venue. The show was
well attended and a great success.

Bayan Foundation Learning Program Available Soon -
China

The Bayan Foundation Learning Program will be available
soon, published by the Beijing Youth Media Publishing House. This program
is suitable for beginners and is divided into two sections: Etudes and
Concert Pieces. Editor Li Yansheng has included 110 Etudes of differing
degrees of difficulty, which will gradually help students gain improved
playing skills. The concert piece section has 111 short pieces, which
aim to help players enjoy the pleasure of the bayan's unique style.
Russian bayanist, Alexander Skliarov has especially
been invited to play all the audio parts, which will be included with
the program. The set will include 2 books and 4 CDs. For further information

10th Anniversary Tour of the UK

Accordionist Alexander Korbarkov's began his
10th Anniversary Tour of the UK on May 11th with a workshop at the
Weymouth Folk Festival. The tour will include concerts in Wirral,
Southport, Leyland, Banstead Accordion Club, Warwick, Dorridge,
Stoke-on-Trent, London, Long Marston (Nr. Tring) and a final concert
at the Sheffield Accordion Club in Sheffield on June 17th. For tour

On May 18th Alexander will perform at the Sawbridgeworth
Accordion Club, just outside London with Paul
Chamberlain. In addition to the concert, Alexander will hold
