There is always a number of innovative and exciting accordion events happening around Christmas, so please send details of your Christmas and New Year concerts so we can inform interested accordionists and enthusiasts. London Accordion Festival - England

Owen MurrayVincenzo AbbraccianteThe London Accordion Festival will take place on December 8th & 9th at the Wembley Conference Centre in London. Festival goers will be treated to a variety of entertainment by international and local performers such as Gervasio Marcosignori, Vladimir Zubitsky, Frederic Deschamps, Owen Murray, Simone Zanchini/Hallo Mr. Sax, Jack Emblow, Frank Marocco, Corrado Medioli, Romano Viazzani, Gary Blair, David Lukins, David Farmer, Jean Pierre Goncalves Lima, Veli and Susanne Kujala, Mauro Carra, Vincenzo Abbracciante, Djordje Gajic, Jerome Richard, Marielle Roy, KODA, The Czardas Duo, The High Society Dance Orchestra and students of the Royal Academy of Music.

On December 7th the "Czardas Duo" (which includes accordionist Ian Watson) will play and talk about the festival on the "In Tune" show on Radio 3. For further festival details email: info@londonaccordionfest.com

Tango for Four Concert Tour - Japan

Mika VayrynenTango for Four (which includes accordionist Mika Väyrynen) will tour Japan from December 14th to 16th. Their first concert will be held at the Ouji Hall in Tokyo on the 14th, followed by a performance in Fujisawa Shimin Kaikan the following day. Their final concert on the 16th will be held at the Musashino Cultural Hall in Tokyo. For details email: mika.vayrynen@pp.inet.fi

 


Sionna Festival of European Traditional Music - Ireland

The Sionna Festival of European Traditional Music was held for the first time recently, in Limerick, Ireland, with an array of guests from all over Europe. The festival began with a "Box and Fiddle Night" and featured some of Ireland's famous musicians and from overseas, Finnish group Värttinä (accordionist Markku Lepistö), Simon Thoumire (concertina), David Milligan and Deaf Shepherd who flew in from Bulgaria that day!

New Accordion Festival - Finland

On November 16th and 17th a new accordion festival "Accordion Days in Spirit of Kuhmo" was held in Tammisaari, South-West Finland. The event included three main concerts with performances by accordionists Jukka-Pekka Kuusela, Kalle Välimaa (Artistic Director) and flutist Riitta Saikkonen. Their programmes included works by Gagnidze, Derbenko, Piazzolla, Jokinen, Trojan, Lundquist, Holminov, Scarlatti, Franck and Mendelssohn. In addition the world premiere of "The Sunset of Our Time" (for two accordions by Finnish composer Juha Jokelainen) was performed.

Over 30 young musicians took part in work shops given by Kalle Välimaa (chamber music) and Jukka-Pekka Kuusela (solo repertoire). The festival was so successful, another is planned for next year. Book Presentation Includes Music and Dance - USA

DancersDaran KravanhOn December 1st a presentation evening was held at the Fircest United Methodist Church in Tacoma, Washington for the book entitled "Music Through the Dark" written by Bree Lafreniere and Daran Kravanh. The book is an extraordinary story of Daran's experience of Cambodia's holocaust during the 1970's. Daran was a target for execution himself, but his talent for playing the accordion saved his life!

Over 200 people attended the event, which included a performance by Daran of "Viel Veng Chhnangay", "Koh Kong", "Top of the Tree", "Kraing Chapey" and "Death's Embrace" while Bree Lafreniere read some sections of the book.

Prior to the actual book presentation, young Cambodian classical dancers performed to "set the scene". Following the book's presentation the audience gave a standing ovation. Daran and Bree autographed a large number of books and CD's that were sold. All proceeds will be donated to the Orphanage Center in Cambodia along with other donations received.

Anniversary Celebrations Continue - Russia

Yet another concert to celebrate Sofia Gubaidulina's anniversary will be held in the Glinka Philharmonic Hall in St. Petersburg on December 13th. The concert will feature accordionist Sergej Tchirkov who will perform Gubaidulina's famous master piece "De Profundis" as well as "In Croce" (accordion and cello) in duo with Alexei Vasiliev, cellist with the St. Petersburg State Philharmonic Orchestra.

Later that day, Sergej will perform with the new music group "eNsemble". Their program will include works by Adriana Hoelszky such as "Segmenten - I" (for seven instruments, including the accordion), "Segmenten-II" and "Segmenten-III" (for accordion, oboe and double-bass). Bayanist Performs with Choir - Netherlands

Russian bayanist Anatoli Senine will perform with the "Kroonstad" female choir on December 9th at the Remonstrantse Kerk in Den Haag, Zuid-Holland. Senine is an orchestra conductor and arranger. He has performed in over two thousand concerts during his more than 35 years of creative activity. Currently he is an accordion teacher and conductor of several music ensembles from music schools in Maastricht, Haarlem, Zoeterwoude and Delft (Netherlands). Robert Davine Passed Away this Week - USA

We have just heard the sad news that Robert Davine (University of Denver Accordion Studies Department) died this week. We will publish an obituary on the Memorials site to remember and honor Robert, as soon as possible.

 


Yann Tiersen at l' Olympia - France

French accordionist and composer Yann Tiersen played in the legendary concert-hall "l'Olympia" in Paris on November 20th and 21st. This 31 year old musician was very successful in 2001 with the soundtrack for the film "Amélie de Montmartre". Tiersen and his band are still on tour in France and will return to Paris for more concerts in spring 2002. For further information email: rwittich@hotmail.com

Istituto Musicale Concert - Italy

Canadian Accordionist Tours England

Canadian accordionist Joseph Petric is currently touring England until December 18th. The tour will include a series of concerts, workshops and master classes. Petric's program includes works by Bach, Soler, Lutowslawski and Cimarosa.

Cybelvis in Denver - USA

Miss Cybelvis Monroe will entertain at a "wacky festival of fun" (kicking off a weekend of The Denver Cacophony Society's 2001 Santacon), held from December 21st at the Bluebird Theater in Denver.

Miss Cybelvis Monroe is a Marilyn Monroe impersonator named Cybele who performs Elvis Presley's hits to accordion & sequencer back-up by Botielus from Samsonite & Delight-Ya. The duo has shared stages with "Those Darn Accordions", "Polkacide", "Bjorn Again" and "El Vez". For further details email: Cybelvis@Cybelvis.com


"It's time to play the Accordion" Concert - Japan

On December 6th, four bands featuring accordionists performed at a concert entitled "It's time to play the Accordions" at the "Mino-tall‚Q" restaurant in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo. Accordionist Yuich Ohtsuka also played at this event.

Bolkovski 60th Birthday Celebrations - Russia

On November 30th a concert took place at the Palace of Youth, Ekaterinburg, Ural in honour of Leonid Bolkovski's 60th birthday. Forty years ago, he was a founder and the first conductor of the accordion orchestra "Bayanists of Ekaterinburg", which under his direction has participated in many Russian and International competitions and festivals, as well as performing many concerts in Russia and touring internationally to Greece, Italy, China and Germany. X International Competition of Accordion "Cantabria" - Spain

Enrique TelleriaThe X International Competition of Accordion "Cantabria" was held from November 16th to 18th in Spain. The event began with a Welcome Concert with a performance by guest accordionist Gorka Hermosa and the Holy chorus María of Solvay who performed with the "Acordes Cantabros" Accordion Orchestra. Bandoneonist Enrique Telleria was a member of the jury and also entertained at the event.

An Evening with Bulgarian and Greek Musicians - USA

On December 7th a concert and dance of Bulgarian, Greek, and Rom (Gypsy) music will be held at the Slavonic Center in San Francisco. Accordionist Mitko Tonchev (Bulgaria) will perform passionate and exotic songs and dance tunes with four other musicians. For details email: openvoice@hotmail.com



Accordionists at Santa Parade - New Zealand

The North Shore Accordion Orchestra (conducted by Lionel Reekie) performed at the recent annual Santa Parade in Auckland. An audience of over 40,000 children and adults enjoyed their varied program, which included "Radetsky March" and "Snoopy's Christmas".

A few days later the orchestra entertained at the Hillsborough Village with a variety of solo and orchestral pieces.

Amsterdam Accordion Club Forzando Performance - Netherlands

The Amsterdam Accordion Club Forzando will perform at the De Eenhoorn Hotel on December 15th in conjunction with NOVAM. The club has four orchestras that entertain regularly in shopping centres and old folk's homes in Amsterdam. Their program includes favourites like "Que Sera, Sera" and "What A Wonderful World". Beth El Synagogue Hanuka Concert - USA

Klezmos (which includes accordionist/singer Wendy Morrison, Marc Glickman - dumbek, guitar & vocals, Jonah Blaustein - clarinet & sax, Ralph Gordon - bass and Alexander Mitchell - violin, mandolin, percussion & vocals) will perform at the Beth El Synagogue Hanuka Concert in Norfolk VA on December 15th.
