The accordion
was integrated into Bulgarian folk music during the 1950's.
Despite a small decline in the 1970's, it is still very popular.
The piano accordion is taught in conservatories.
Boris
Karlov was the first Bulgarian accordionist to make a recording.
He was a very popular figure. Karlov also taught, and among
his most well known students were Emil and Kosta Kolev. His
brother Hristo began playing the accordion (influenced by
his elder brother), and they sometimes performed and recorded
together. Boris Karlov passed away in 1964. Another popular
accordionist, Kosta Kolev, was also a prolific composer and
arranged many Bulgarian folk tunes for the accordion.
