Dangendorf - Spuren
The style
of Dagendorf, devoid of virtuosity, is however rich in nuances
that require the careful attention of the listener.
There are 16 titles all played in splendid solitude. At the two
ends of the CD are the two extremes in the performance: the initial
"Happy Birthday Kilian", is played in an unusual uneven
tempo which is nonetheless simple and cheerful; whilst the concluding
number "Freitag der Dreizehnte", where the musician
improvises using long, elaborate phrasing, and evokes the images
of shadows in a nordic cathedral.
In between, the other 14 tunes are mostly original with the exception
of a couple of traditional Turkish pieces and one Finnish piece.
Quite a few, very well executed tunes are little more than a minute
long.
Perhaps it is here that Dangendorf excels, playing with great
sensitivity and inspired poetic urgency, using just a few notes
to express the intense blue night. Overall a very pleasing recording
which satisfies more with further listening rather than immediately.
