The
intriguing pieces performed on this CD are organized into three sections: A.
Four Portraits (Originally written and inspired by Michael Cunningham's novel
The Hours, 2003
B. Accordion Misdemeanors (Originally written for
E. Annie Proulx's audio book version of her novel Accordion Crimes)
C.
The Well-Tampered Accordion (Seven pieces were originally written especially for
this collection by Guy Klucevsek, 2002-2003 and published by Guy
Klucevsek Music - BMI; the other five pieces were originally composed for
other media (theatre, dance) and/or other orchestrations.
Guy
Klucevsek, like most performers, advances both his compositional and playing
skills with each passing year. He is a very active performer and has more than
a passing acquaintance with equally active and successful composers and performing
groups; it would seem, therefore, that these various collaborations have inspired
him in numerous manners.
These compositions are of various durations and
most all of them offer interesting themes, sometimes developed and expanded, sometimes
not so much. Nevertheless, as in past Klucevsek works reviewed, they are well
executed and pleasing to the listener even though this reviewer still yearns for
additional development that would, hopefully, result in an ever more comprehensive
composition. That statement, however, should not detract in any way from my praise
for this album! The themes are quite appealing, fascinating and entertaining for
the most part and showcase the typical Klucevsek
compositional style. They are good!
Although only two of the pieces are
said to be inspired by previous Bacharach pieces, do not expect to hear One Less
Bell to Answer or Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head. No! These are indeed Klucevsek
works! The titles, except those used in Accordion Misdemeanors, often have nothing
to do with what the listener hears, perhaps, however interesting. By the way,
if you have not had the pleasure of reading Accordion Misdemeanors, please do
so
and since the audio book version has background music by Guy
Klucevsek, maybe that is the way to do it.
The book is a real gem!
Since some of these pieces were originally written for dance groups and are so
perfect for that venue, after you hear them I think you (like I) will want to
listen to the music again sometime with the dancers. In the meantime, close your
eyes and envision those dancers on a stage interpreting the music you are hearing.
