Petri Makkonen in St.Petersburg (report)

Finland/St.Petersburg
Contributed 11.03.2001 by Sergej Tchirkov

Dear Reader, we have already written about the concerts of Petri Makkonen in St.Petersburg, (look here). Now, we would like to offer you a very brief report about the tour.

The very next day after the arrival, Mr.Makkonen gave his first concert in the region of St.Petersburg, a little town named Tchudovo. The successful concert was followed by the meeting with the composer, which took place in the Cultural Centre of St.Petersburg the next day. At the meeting, Petri Makkonen presented a lecture on his own music, showing some pieces of his works. Most of this music, has been composed for children, and i do believe that working on Makkonen’s Children Suites and other works is a real pleasure for every child - so far is the music from the traditional so called "children music".

Besides, all the titles are just wonderful! Listen how marvellous does it sound:
"Tango of the Skeleton in Love"... So romantic!..
The final recital of Petri Makkonen, which attracted more then 300 listeners took place at the Chamber Hall of Glinka Capella in St.Petersburg, and was so well received by the audience that Mr. Makkonen had to give three encores!

The program included following works:

  • J.S. Bach Toccata and Fuga in D minor
  • D. Scarlatti Sonata in D major
  • A. Kusyakov Sonata Nr. 2 (in three movements)
  • P. Makkonen "The flight beyond the time" (selected as a test piece for 1997 Coupe Mondiale)
  • P. Makkonen "Disco - Toccata"
  • P. Makkonen "Space Music" (in four parts)
  • P. Makkonen "Children Suite"
  • P. Makkonen "Red Bike"
  • P. Makkonen "...like a swans.."
  • P. Makkonen "Waltsing emotions"
  • P. Makkonen "Polka Furioso"
  • S. Rachmaninov -I. Jashkevitch "Italian Polka"
