Competition Rules for 2018

43th International Citt di Castelfidardo Accordion Prize for soloists and ensemble

2018, September 9th  16th

RULES (2018, February 13th release)

  1. The City Council Administration of Castelfidardo (Italy) announces the International Citt di Castelfidardo Accordion Prize dedicated to soloists and ensembles from 9th  16th September 2018. 
  2. Registration is 30.00 for soloists and 50.00 for groups. The registration for the Classical Composition category is free.
  3. Competitors may register for several categories but not repeat the same program in different categories. Entrants can participate with any kind of accordion, of any brand.
  4. Deadline for registration: august 31th using the special online at pifcastelfidardo.it
  5. form for the category(s) you are entering.
  6. Competitors will be contacted by e-mail about their registration.

CLASSICAL ACCORDION

PREMIO Category
Soloists no age limit – 3 rounds

First round
Entrants must perform a programme of their choice lasting a maximum of 20 minutes, including one composition for harpsichord or organ by J.S.Bach.
The programmes should demonstrate as much as possible the diversity of the original repertoire for accordion, drawing from the repertoire of the various national schools ; at the same time, they should include pieces that are different in character, era, taste and style.
A maximum of 8 entrants will be chosen to go into the second round.

Second round
Entrants who make it to this round must perform a programme of their choice (different from their first round programme) lasting a maximum of 25 minutes.
A maximum of 3 entrants will be chosen to go into the third round.

Third round
Entrants in this round will perform a with Orchestra performing the mandatory piece that will be communicated and made available (free of charge) on pifcastelfidardo.it in April 2018.

Free choice programme with a maximum length of 16 minutes. Entrants cannot present programmes totally composed of transcriptions.

Chamber music ensemble no age limit

This category is open to any group (from a minimum of 2 to a maximum of 12 partecipants) with no age limit, comprised of at least one accordion that should have the main role in the ensemble. Groups can be composed completely of accordions, or of an accordion and other instruments.
Entrants must present a programme of their choice with a maximum length of 20 minutes

COMPOSITION Category
No age limit

In order to encourage the creation of new repertoires, composers are invited to write a work for ACCORDION & STRING ORCHESTRA, to which it is possible to add a Piano and a Percussionist. The composition must never have been performed in public, under penalty of exclusion from the competition. Free registration.

The composer must remember that the winning piece will be performed by the candidates admitted to the THIRD ROUND of the PREMIO category (2018), as well as the following indications:

  • total duration between minimum 5 and maximum 8 minutes;
  • must contain at least one solo part for accordion;
  • the soloists will perform only one rehersal with the orchestra before the final performance.

Composers are invited to send their score by form on pifcastelfidardo.it no later than 15th April 2018 in PDF format (full score WITHOUT NAME OF THE AUTHOR and full score WITH NAME, the single parts will be requested later) and an MP3 audio demo performed live or by music software. If the work had more than one author, the registration must be made by the main composer, indicating in the score all the names.

JAZZ ACCORDION

JAZZ Category
Soloists or ensemble no age limit – 2 rounds

Admission to this category is open to SOLOISTS or GROUPS of up to 8 participants in which the accordion has the main role. Groups can be composed completely of accordions, or of an accordion and other instruments. The use of acoustic, digital, electronic, chromatic and diatonic accordions is allowed.

First round
Entrants must perform a programme of their choice with a maximum length of 18 minutes including at least one standard from the Real Book.

Second round
Only 3 entrants will be admittted to the second round, who will perform with a different program from the first round and not exceeding 7 minutes.

The jury are made up of experts, critics and jazz musicians and will evaluate personal style, improvisational and instrumental skill and the artistic project as a whole.

VIRTUOSO SENIOR Category
Soloists no age limit – 2 rounds

First Round
Entrants must present a programme of their choice with a maximum length of 15 minutes (pieces from the following repertoires are accepted: variet , jazz, blues, pop, South American, in published or unpublished arrangements).

Second round
Only 3 entrants will be admitted to the second round with a repertoire different from the first round with a maximum of 7 minutes.

WORLD ACCORDION

 

WORLD ENSEMBLE Category
Soloists no age limit – 2 rounds

This category is open to any ensemble (from a minimum of 2 to a maximum of 12 participants) no age limit, comprised of at least one accordion or one diatonic accordion (of any model), a garmoshka or a bandoneon or digital accordion, that should have the main role in the ensemble. Ensemble may contain more than one free reed instrument or with only free reed instruments (like the ones mentioned above). One piece of their Country must be included in at least one of the two rounds. The organization suggests wearing traditional clothes from their Country.

First round
Entrants must present a programme of their choice with a maximum length of 15 minutes, including compositions, arrangements and creative reworkings of pieces from the world music, ethno jazz, ethnic, folk and traditional repertoires.

Second round
Only 3 entrants will be admittted to the second round, who will perform with a different program from the first round and not exceeding 7 minutes.

Category is open to soloists who use an accordion, a diatonic accordion (of any model), a garmoshka, a bandoneon or a digital accordion. Competitors must present a programme of their choice of maximum duration of 12 minutes, including compositions, arrangements and creative elaborations of pieces from the world music, ethno jazz, ethnic, folk and traditional repertoires.
One piece of their Country must be included.

Category is open to soloists who use an accordion, a diatonic accordion (of any model), a garmoshka, a bandoneon or a digital accordion. Competitors must present a programme of their choice of maximum duration of 9 minutes, including compositions, arrangements and creative elaborations of pieces from the world music, ethno jazz, ethnic, folk and traditional repertoires.
One piece of their Country must be included.

ALL CATEGORIES RULES

  1. Entrants in the CLASSICAL MUSIC section are required to present 3 printed copies of the pieces in their programme to the commission, at the beginning of the round. The jury reserves the right to penalise entrants who do not present these copies. At the end of the performance the scores will be returned to the entrant.
  2. Entrants in the NON CLASSICAL categories, do not have the obligation to submit to the commission a copy of the repertoire they will perform.
  3. The President of the jury has the right to end the performance of the contestant if the time limit of the category will exceed by ONE MINUTE the time required for each category. The pauses between one song and another will not be counted.
  4. Each jury member will give a score from 10 to 20. The highest and the lowest scores will be discarded. The scores given by every member of the jury will be made public. For the PREMIO category, and other categories with more rounds, a participant s final score will be calculated by calculating the SUM of the score obtained in each of the rounds.
  5. The order of performance of entrants WILL BE DRAWN for every single category and every single round and communicated to the candidates at least one day before the beginning of the auditions. The timetable for each round will be available in the Secretariat s Office the day before the beginning of the following day s rounds.
  6. Each entrant must confirm their presence (by e-mail) the day before the competition, or they may be eliminated. All performances will be open to the public.
  7. The jury reserves the right to not award a prize if the entrants do not reach a high enough artistic level or do not follow the artistic requirements.
  8. The decision of the jury is not open to appeal.
  9. All competitors will receive the participation diploma , to be collected in the secretary after the results have been released.
  10. Radio, tv or streaming use of the competition rounds or final concert will not involve any compensation to the entrants, nor can they request the use of said media products.
  11. Registration for the competition involves the acceptance of these regulations. The Court of Ancona is responsible for dealing with any legal issues.
  12. The first three prize winners in each category must be present during the award ceremony in the Astra Theatre (or risk not receiving their prize). All monetary prizes will be paid via cheque, bank wire transfer or electronic payment.
  13. The first prize winners in all categories must perform during their award ceremony and must also perform pieces from their programmes that are chosen by the jury.
  14. Travel and accommodation costs are at the expense of each entrant. The first 100 entrants will have the possibility to make use of free lodging (one night for italian entrants and two nights for foreign entrants: no singles rooms) arranged in structures associated with the the organisation of the PIF, and only for those people actually participating in the competition. Participants can extend their stay (at their own cost) at the special price per night. The Pro Loco Tourist Association (tel. 071 7822987 / 071 7823162) is able to assist entrants during their stay.
  15. The organisation of the competition will not be responsible for any kind of event that may occur during the festival.
  16. The organisation reserves the right to modify or add things to the regulations at its sole discretion. For the definitive version please see the Italian text published at www.pifcastelfidardo.it
  17. Personal data of the entrants, including audio and video taken during the competition, are registered and used only for competition purposes (Art. 13, c. 1, D. L.vo 30th June 2003, n. 196 Codice in materia di dati personali ).
