Frédéric Deschamps - PresidentThe 2009 Trophée Mondial will be held this year in Portugal, organized by the National Delegate Anibal Freire. This country has strong historical links to the CMA. It will be the sixth time that it will host our international competition at the highest level: Alcobaçao (2000), Faro (1996), Setubal (1993), Caldas da Rainha (1985 and 1974). It will be this year in Albufeira, a beautiful city situated on the seafront in the south of Portugal where we will host the Trophée Mondial 2009.

When I said that Portugal was closely linked to the history of Portugal, it is the same for our national delegate Anibal Freire, himself a candidate of our international association having won the Junior classic in 1972 in San Sebastian (Spain) and the Senior Classic in 1974 in Caldas de Rainha (Portugal).

His extensive experience in this association as a first candidate and then delegate, member of International Jury and himself professor of Winners of the Trophée Mondiale, gives all the experience needed to organize a competition for the highest level qualitatively both the reception of foreign delegations and all the logistics of the event.

All information relating to the categories (programs, time, number of works..) are online on this site under "Rules", translated into French and English.

Albufeira is a beautiful city in the South of Portugal. Appreciated for the "intensity" with which it lives all the cultural events that are hosted there, Albufeira is also known for the dynamism and enthusiasm with which it embraces every cultural project.

Once again, Portugal is going to be stage of a Trophée Mondiale and, in my position as the Alcobaça's Accordion Association's president and artistic/technical director, I'm grateful to have the chance to invite all accordion lovers to come and participate and enjoy in this fantastic competition.

Albufeira and Algarve itself deserve to be stage of an event such as the Trophée Mondiale, for their demonstrated persistence in promoting the accordion's musical value, standards and prestige.

Fortunately, this dedication has shown an increase of interest from young accordion players, music schools and public, amazed by the awesome potencial of the accordion.

I also would like to thank the essential support of Albufeira's City Hall; the dedicated work of all those who started working on this project months ago and thank the Confedération Mondiale de l'Accordeon - represented by it's President, Frédéric Deschamps - for their reliable confidence in Portugal and Albufeira to be the host of this prestigious event.

Feel welcome, artists, enthusiasts and public, as we participate in another amazing journey through the golden book of the history of the accordion.

Technical/Artistic Director of 59th Trophée Mondial

Welcome from the Mayor
Welcome from the Mayor in Chinese

Albufeira is known as the Capital of Tourism in Portugal. In fact, because of this industry, the city has enjoyed an enormous development in recent decades. Many studies have concluded that Albufeira is one of cities with the best quality of life in Portugal.

This brings enormous responsibilities to the ones that manage the city. For us, it is essential a continuous investment in our Cultural and Patrimonial traditions. On the other hand, Albufeira is a city open to the world. Here live people from almost 80 different countries. That's why we also invest in new cultural languages.

We believe that the investment in this event will contribute to these 2 goals: the promotion of an instrument connected to our culture, and the discovery of new tendencies and musical languages.

That's why it is a privilege to me, as Mayor of the City of Albufeira, to host 59th World Accordion Festival. We have experience and we are motivated. I am sure we will put our best effort in the promotion of this event.

Best Regards,

Desidério Silva
Mayor of Albufeira
